What do you enjoy the most about working in haulage insurance?
I have always had a passion for the motor industry, particularly cars and motorbikes in my personal life.
Anything with wheels fascinates me, I’d say I’m a bit of a petrolhead. Generally speaking, haulage clients are often like-minded individuals who are personable and lovely to work with.
What’s one thing most hauliers misunderstand about their cover?
First notification of loss – clients should aim to notify us of any claim or incident within 24 hours, even in cases where a Policyholder/Third Party may consider private settlement outside of insurance. The sooner a claim is reported into an insurer, enables better management of the costs, which can reduce the overall amounts paid out. The result of early claim notifications can be vital in improving future premiums to the Policyholder.
What does a typical day look like for you at Hazelton Mountford?
Busy! I manage a wide variety of clients, varying from Haulage clients, to Manufacturing risks, Retail, Wholesale, Motor Trade, the list goes on. Each business has its own niche requirements and no two clients are the same. Day to day tasks can include negotiating new business and renewals with insurers and client alike, managing the day to day changes such as adding or removing vehicles/drivers, and managing new and existing claims. My role is to support my client with every element of their insurance. I am very hands on, and enjoy building strong relationships and foundations with my clients, to enable strong, long lasting relationships.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to a new haulage operator?
To be patient with insurance costs. As you gain more experience over 2-3 years trading, so long as the risk runs well with little to no claims, you will start to see an improvement on the rate. No pain no gain!
What’s been your most rewarding moment so far?
Over the last 2 years, I have been lucky enough to pick up my two largest clients. When I started this job over 7 years ago, I could never have imagined I would be where I am today, working with the wonderful clients that I have. Seeing the difference we have made to these clients through industry expertise and service alone, has been so rewarding, and really validates that we are good at what we do.
